During the VII Latin American Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility organized by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy a few days ago, the reflection table on Corporate Volunteering was held, where Susana Barnetche y Pous, President of the Board of Directors of the Mexican Alliance of Volunteering (AMEVOL); Jaime Ulloa, from the Voluntary Work Association of Peru, the researcher Angélica Martínez from Cemefi and Juan Ángel Poyatos from Voluntare from Spain. This forum served as a preamble to the meeting of the I Ibero-American Congress of Corporate Volunteering 2014 that will take place next May, on the 22nd and 23rd at the World Trade Center Mexico City. This Congress has 3 main stages that consist of holding the same number of meetings in host cities. Thus, in Lima, Peru, on March 26 and 27, the Work Session on Corporate Volunteering was held and where, by the way, the Mexican company Cemex presented its “Hands to Work” program that has managed to mobilize more than 45 thousand hours of volunteer service through 9 thousand volunteers since this project began. The calendar of events, after the Mexico City meeting, includes two more appointments: Bogotá, Colombia; on June 1 and 2; Barcelona, Spain; on October 21 and 22. In the forum referred to, Jaime Ulloa, President of the Voluntary Work Association of Peru, also gave the workshop: “Design of an innovative and high-impact corporate volunteering program.”

How has corporate volunteering evolved? 2. What is the fundamental objective of corporate volunteering? 3. What recommendations would you make for a company that wants to start a corporate volunteer program? 4. What are the advantages and challenges that a company faces when implementing a corporate volunteer program? 5. What is the future of corporate volunteering in Mexico? Attendees asked several questions and expressed interesting concerns, such as: What is the difference between volunteering and philanthropy?; Is it necessary for the Company's Management to contribute money to the corporate volunteering program? How can the generation of volunteering from the company be stimulated? If volunteering is done from the company, what is better: creating a foundation or encourage volunteering?; What is better: carrying out isolated activities or permanent programs?, among others. From AMEVOL's point of view, there are still multiple and profound obstacles that do not allow the company to encourage volunteering. 
There are various social, economic and cultural reasons. To name a few, the low participation and interest of citizens in public affairs, distrust in formal voluntary groups, the lack of trained personnel to establish programs and manage the voluntary resource. Vision on the topics in which each company can participate. On the other hand, in our country people perceive that the impact of volunteering is low or marginal, it is carried out mainly from person to person and it is believed that it does not generate a significant legacy for the community that reinforces the benefit of serving in the community. For example, Susana Barnetche pointed out: “in Mexico we are at a turning point in the evolution of what was understood as corporate volunteering because, when positions in companies were occupied mainly by men, volunteer activities were carried out by your wives. Hence, in reality there was no corporate volunteering, since those who did it did not work in those companies, they were their spouses. That explains the presence of so many volunteers who continue to name themselves 'lady volunteers'.” The challenge of promoting and diversifying corporate volunteering activities would also positively affect the volunteering carried out by other social actors, such as universities, churches and civil organizations. |
